Punjab Informs High Court No Rape Confirmation in LPU Violence

Punjab has informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that no confirmation of rape has been established in the recent LPU violence at Lovely Professional University, following a petition filed by BTech student Ravi Raj seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation probe. The government’s response was submitted in reply to the public interest litigation that alleges the need for a thorough inquiry into the alleged rape rumour, the ensuing violence, and the property damage that erupted at the campus.

The unrest, which involved violent clashes, arson and looting, erupted at the university after a rumoured rape case was reported on September 26. Authorities have not yet confirmed any such assault, and the High Court has been updated on the current status of the investigation, noting that no concrete evidence of rape has emerged to date.

Ravi Raj, a BTech student at LPU, filed a public interest litigation urging the court to order a CBI investigation into the alleged rape rumour, the ensuing violence, and the subsequent property damage, emphasizing the seriousness of the misinformation that spread and its impact on the campus environment.

The state’s legal representative submitted a response to the High Court, stating that investigations are ongoing and that no concrete evidence of rape has been found so far. The filing underscores the authorities’ concern over the spread of misinformation and the resulting disruption to the university community, while reaffirming that the matter remains under active review.

Located in the Chandigarh region, Lovely Professional University is a private institution that has become the focal point of the recent disturbances. The incident has drawn attention from local authorities and the judiciary, prompting a formal legal response and raising questions about campus safety and information verification.
