SAD (Punar Surjit) delegation meets Punjab governor, seeks amendment to Sikh religious act
SAD (Punar Surjit) delegation meets Punjab governor, seeking amendment to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, after Sikh consultation.
A delegation from SAD (Punar Surjit) has met the Punjab governor, presenting a memorandum that calls for amendments to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. The Act, enacted in 2026, governs the procedure for the removal of the holy scripture from the sanctum of the gurdwara under specific circumstances. The delegation argues that the current wording does not reflect the consensus of the Sikh community and therefore requires revision. In the memorandum, the group stresses that any change to the Act must follow extensive consultation with recognized Sikh religious institutions. They contend that such consultation is essential to preserve the sanctity of the Granth and to maintain public trust. The meeting, held at the governor’s office, provided the delegation an opportunity to outline their concerns directly to the senior administrative officer. The governor listened to the representation and acknowledged receipt of the memorandum. The memorandum is now with the governor’s office for review. Officials have indicated that the matter will be examined in accordance with procedural norms, and any further action will depend on the outcome of the review.
