Punjab Government Faces Heat Over Controversial Land Allocation Scandal

Chandigarh, April 28 — The Punjab government is facing a fresh wave of criticism after an independent audit uncovered serious irregularities in the recent allocation of over 2,000 acres of state-owned land to private developers across the state.

The findings, released by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) office on Tuesday, indicate that the process skipped mandatory public consultations and that several plots were transferred at prices well below market value. Critics argue that the deals could have been used to benefit politically connected firms.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have organized protests in Amritsar and Patiala, demanding stricter oversight of land deals and stricter enforcement of the Punjab Land Ceiling Act. Demonstrators carried banners reading ‘No to Corrupt Allocation’ and ‘Transparency Now.’

Legal experts warn that the irregularities could expose the state to litigation, especially if the allocations were made without proper environmental clearances. ‘If the projects proceed without adhering to statutory norms, they could be challenged in court on grounds of illegality,’ said senior advocate Harbaksh Singh.
