Panjab Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh is preparing to introduce an AI‑assisted machine that will support early detection of breast cancer.

The new system will focus on identifying small clusters of calcium deposits, known as calcifications, which serve as early markers of the disease and are sometimes missed, especially in women with dense breast tissue.

AI technology to detect calcifications

Using artificial intelligence, the machine analyses mammographic images to spot subtle patterns of calcification that may indicate precancerous changes, supporting AI‑assisted breast cancer detection and assisting radiologists in making more accurate readings.

Why early detection matters

Finding calcifications early can lead to earlier treatment, higher cure rates and better survival, a benefit highlighted by medical experts working in breast oncology.

PGIMER’s role in the initiative

As a premier government medical institute, PGIMER will integrate the AI tool into its radiology department, expanding screening capacity and supporting women in the Chandigarh region.
