Nourea shortage in Punjab, says agriculture department
Punjab agriculture director GS Brar says 10.86 lakh tonnes of urea are available against a 15 lakh tonne requirement, assuring no shortage for farmers.
Punjab’s agriculture department has issued a clear statement to dispel concerns about fertilizer availability. Director General of Agriculture GS Brar said that the state currently holds 10.86 lakh tonnes of urea, which is enough to meet the total requirement of 15 lakh tonnes scheduled between April and September.
The timeframe covers the main cropping season when urea application is essential for wheat and other cereals. By confirming the stock level, the department aims to reassure farmers that planting schedules will not be disrupted.
Brar’s remarks were made in response to media queries and public speculation about possible shortages. He emphasized that the available quantity is sufficient for the entire period, and no additional procurement is being planned at this stage.
Officials note that the figure reflects the balance between what has already been received and what is projected to be needed. The department continues to monitor supply chains closely, but no immediate action is required.
Farmers have welcomed the clarification, as timely access to urea remains critical for a successful harvest. The statement underscores the department’s commitment to transparency and proactive communication during the season.
Overall, the agriculture department’s announcement provides a straightforward assessment of the current fertilizer situation, aiming to prevent unnecessary alarm among the farming community.
