Congress worker detained in Hoshiarpur after police complaint over alleged insult to AAP poll symbol
Congress worker detained in Hoshiarpur after police complaint alleging insult to AAP poll symbol; police say preventive detention was warranted.
A Congress worker was taken into custody by Hoshiarpur police on Tuesday after a complaint was filed alleging that he insulted the AAP poll symbol during a local gathering, police said.
The worker, a resident of Hoshiarpur, was produced before a local magistrate and placed under preventive detention, police said. The complaint alleged that he scattered brooms — a symbol used by the AAP during its election campaigns — and posted provocative content on social media, police said.
The detention was carried out early Tuesday morning, and the worker was produced before a local magistrate who ordered his custody for a period deemed necessary to prevent further disturbance, police said.
The incident comes amid heightened rivalry between the Congress and the AAP ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Punjab, a rivalry that has often led to heated exchanges and occasional clashes at public events.
Police said the detention was preventive, aimed at averting any further disturbance, and the worker remains in custody while the case proceeds.
