Haryana will add 820 electric rickshaws to its network of gaushalas, the state’s traditional cattle shelters. The announcement comes as the state currently manages 770 such facilities, each varying in size and cattle capacity. According to official data, 553 of the gaushalas house fewer than 1,000 animals, while 79 can accommodate up to 2,000, 20 up to 3,000, eight up to 4,000, and one each can hold up to 5,000 and 6,000 cattle.

The procurement plan targets the diverse needs of these shelters, from small herds to larger operations. By introducing electric rickshaws, the government hopes to replace diesel‑powered vehicles that currently transport cattle, feed, and waste. The move is expected to lower fuel costs and emissions, aligning with broader sustainability goals across the region.

Officials say the e‑rickshaws will be distributed based on the specific logistical requirements of each gaushala. The procurement process is being coordinated through the state’s animal husbandry department, which oversees the management of the shelters. While exact timelines have not been disclosed, the initiative reflects a push to modernize traditional practices without compromising their core purpose.

The scale of the project underscores the growing importance of gaushalas in Haryana’s rural landscape. With a total of 770 facilities spread across the state, the government’s investment in electric transport could set a precedent for other regions managing large livestock populations. As the details of the rollout become clearer, the focus remains on enhancing efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint of cattle management.

The initiative marks a notable step in blending technology with agricultural tradition, aiming to streamline operations while maintaining the cultural significance of gaushalas in the state.
