Gunfire Erupts Inside New Delhi Secretariat, Security Tightens

At around 10:30 am on Tuesday, a gunman burst into the New Delhi secretariat, the fortified complex that houses the ministries of home and parliamentary affairs, and opened fire.
The secretariat sits just three kilometres from Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Lok Sabha, making it a symbolic nerve centre of the capital’s administration.
Delhi police cordoned off the area within minutes, evacuating civilians and sealing the premises. Officers in tactical gear moved to the upper floors as gunshots echoed through the corridors.
‘The situation is under control,’ a senior officer told reporters as they secured the building.
The suspect, identified as a 32‑year‑old from the outskirts of the city, was apprehended after a brief standoff. He surrendered when his weapon jammed.
‘He claimed he was protesting a recent policy, but investigators are still probing motive,’ the officer added.
The incident comes amid heightened security across government installations following recent threats. Officials say the quick response prevented casualties.
While the building remains a symbol of governance, the breach raises questions about the adequacy of current security protocols.
Political leaders have called for a review of the security apparatus, and the home ministry is expected to order a comprehensive audit.
The secretariat will remain closed to the public for the next few days as forensic teams comb the scene. Normalcy is expected to resume once the investigation concludes.
