The hill state of Himachal Pradesh braced for a fresh bout of torrential monsoon rain on Wednesday, with intense showers reported in Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala. The downpour claimed the lives of four people in separate rain‑related incidents, according to state officials.
Landslides and waterlogged pathways forced the closure of several key roads across the region. Authorities said the disrupted routes included mountain passes and arterial highways, making travel hazardous for those who attempted to move through the affected zones.
In addition to the road blockages, the heavy rain caused swelling of rivers and streams, leading to flooding in low‑lying areas. Power supply was interrupted in multiple localities, with outages reported in parts of Shimla and Manali, officials added.
The deaths occurred as the state continues to experience the monsoon’s peak, a period when landslides and flash floods are common. Each year, the seasonal rains bring both vital water resources and severe weather challenges to the mountainous terrain.
State disaster management teams have been deployed to assess the situation and restore connectivity, though full restoration of the closed roads may take several days. Residents are advised to avoid travel on the affected routes until conditions are deemed safe.
