ED Questions AAP Leader Raghav Chadha in Delhi Liquor Policy Probe

The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday questioned Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha as part of its ongoing investigation into the Delhi excise policy, seeking clarification on alleged irregularities in the policy’s formulation and implementation.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the questioning took place at the agency’s regional office in Delhi. Chadha was reportedly asked about the decision‑making process behind the policy, the role of private consultants, and whether any undue influence was exerted on the excise department.

Sources said the agency is examining whether the policy favoured certain vendors and whether there were lapses in the approval chain. They added that the probe also aims to assess any potential link between the policy’s rollout and political funding channels.

Chadha, who has previously defended the policy as part of the government’s effort to revamp the liquor market, declined to comment extensively, citing ongoing legal proceedings. He indicated that he would cooperate fully with the investigation.

Political analysts note that the questioning comes at a time when the AAP is gearing up for upcoming municipal elections, and the outcome of the ED’s inquiry could influence public perception of the party’s governance model.

Legal experts say that if evidence of misuse of office or corruption emerges, it could trigger further action by other agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The Delhi government has maintained that the excise policy was implemented transparently, with all recommendations vetted by the finance department. However, opposition parties have raised questions about the speed of the policy’s adoption and the lack of public consultation.

The case has drawn attention from anti‑corruption watchdogs, who have called for a broader review of state‑run excise frameworks across the country. They argue that the Delhi episode may set a precedent for how future liquor policies are crafted and audited.

Meanwhile, the ED has indicated that it will continue to question other officials and businesspeople linked to the policy, aiming to build a comprehensive picture of the alleged irregularities.

As the investigation unfolds, the political stakes remain high, with both supporters and critics watching closely for any developments that could affect the AAP’s credibility ahead of the next electoral cycle.
