Chitkara University ‘rape-suicide’ protest, buildings on fire, highway blocked
Students at Chitkara University in Punjab blocked the Delhi-Amritsar highway at 4am, demanding an FIR after ‘rape-suicide’ claims sparked protests and set university buildings ablaze.
Protest erupts at Chitkara University
The Chitkara University protest in Punjab became the second institution in the state to face serious allegations, as flames engulfed campus buildings and the Delhi-Amritsar national highway was blocked by students early in the morning.
Around 4 am, students gathered outside the campus and halted traffic on the highway, demanding that a First Information Report (FIR) be filed regarding the alleged incident.
Understanding the ‘rape-suicide’ claim
The phrase ‘rape‑suicide’ refers to claims that a sexual assault led to a suicide, a charge that has sparked outrage among students and raised concerns about campus safety.
Lovely Professional University, the first institution in Punjab to be targeted by similar allegations, had previously been involved in a separate protest, indicating a pattern of student unrest across the state’s higher education sector.
Students demanded that police file an FIR to investigate the alleged assault and the resulting suicide, emphasizing the need for accountability.
The incident took place on the Delhi-Amritsar national highway, a major route linking the national capital with the border city of Amritsar, which was completely stopped by the demonstration.
The incident reflects ongoing concerns about how universities handle sexual assault allegations and the demand for swift legal action.
