Backed by a GI tag and praise from PM Modi, organic Arabica cultivation is providing economic hope for tribal farmers in Araku.
Backed by a GI tag and praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, organic Arabica coffee cultivation is powering economic independence for tribal farmers in Araku.
The Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which certifies the distinct qualities of Araku’s Arabica coffee, has been highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose public endorsement underscores the initiative’s significance for the region.
Economic significance
Farmers across the Eastern Ghats are adopting organic Arabica cultivation, a practice that supports their economic independence by reducing reliance on chemical inputs and linking them to broader market opportunities.
The organic method preserves traditional farming knowledge while meeting growing consumer demand for sustainably produced coffee, contributing to long‑term livelihood stability for tribal communities.
Government recognition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the Araku coffee project, emphasizing its role in uplifting tribal farmers and promoting indigenous products as part of broader rural development goals.
The GI tag provides a legally protected label for “Araku Arabica”, assuring consumers of its authenticity and enabling farmers to benefit from a protected label and market access.
These combined efforts aim to create a resilient coffee sector that supports the economic empowerment of tribal farmers in the Eastern Ghats region.
