The Chandigarh court has denied bail to a 67-year-old advocate accused in an NDPS conspiracy case. Police recovered 1.365 kg of cannabis from a Honda City car belonging to Ashok Sehgal after an anonymous tip was received by the control room in September 2022. The matter is being tried under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which penalises drug trafficking and related conspiracies. During the hearing, the defence sought bail, while the prosecution maintained that the evidence was robust. The judge denied bail, ordering the accused to remain in custody. This ruling reflects a broader trend in the Union Territory, where courts have been increasingly strict in handling NDPS violations. Legal experts say that the NDPS framework gives judges discretion to balance the rights of the accused with the need to protect the integrity of investigations. The case will continue to be examined as the trial proceeds.
