Chandigarh High Court stays senior citizens’ admission to Group Home
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed admissions to Chandigarh’s Group Home for senior citizens, halting a plan to open 40 of 80 seats announced by the UT administration on April 28.
Chandigarh – The Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the admission of senior citizens into the city’s Group Home for an indefinite period.
The order comes after the UT administration on April 28 announced its intention to open half of the 80 seats in the facility, a move aimed at addressing the low number of admissions from mentally ill elderly residents.
Under the court’s interim directive, the planned opening of 40 seats will not proceed until a further order is issued.
The Group Home was created to offer specialised care for older adults, especially those with mental health concerns, and its slow uptake had prompted the administration to consider expanding capacity.
The development highlights ongoing debates about senior care infrastructure in the city and the challenges of translating policy plans into operational reality.
The High Court’s stay reflects judicial oversight of civic projects that impact public welfare.
