Chandigarh: Students protest PU hostel campaign ban

Students in Chandigarh’s Panjab University hostels gathered outside the main administrative building to voice their dissent over a ban on political campaigning inside the residences. The demonstration was organized in response to the university’s directive that prohibits any form of electioneering within hostel premises during the current academic session.

Dean of Students YK Rawal addressed the gathering, saying that the students had raised a few minor concerns that had already been resolved amicably. He added that a meeting had been scheduled with the hostel wardens to review the election‑related regulations and ensure that any future grievances are handled through established channels.

The university’s policy, communicated earlier this month, bars students from distributing campaign material, holding rallies, or using common areas for political outreach while the hostels remain under its jurisdiction. Officials explained that the restriction is intended to maintain a neutral environment and prevent disruption to academic activities.

Rawal emphasized that the university remains committed to facilitating free participation in the democratic process, but stressed that such engagement must occur outside hostel boundaries. He noted that the upcoming meeting with wardens will focus on clarifying the scope of permissible activities and on reinforcing the existing rules.

Student representatives, who declined to be named, said the protest was prompted by reports that some peers had been stopped by security personnel while attempting to set up campaign stalls near the hostel gates. They argued that the ban limited their ability to connect with fellow students ahead of the upcoming elections.

While the university has not disclosed any formal complaints filed against specific individuals, the dean’s statement suggests that the minor issues raised were isolated incidents rather than systematic violations. He also indicated that the dialogue with wardens aims to balance student rights with the need for order within the residential community.
